Region 8 Governor Nominee
The civil engineering profession is changing, and the Society needs to change with it. More and more, Civil Engineers are being called on to provide a range of services covering a complete project. This may include public outreach, financing, operations, sustainability, ownership options, and much more.
Much work has been done in the areas of “Raise the Bar,” technologic connectivity, communications to Congress, etc. However, now is the time to make these concepts operational on a section and branch levels, and start measuring results.
We also need to take the good ideas from various sections and make them available to all in a user-friendly way. That’s where the Region 8 Governors can help. Our region covers the largest geographic area of any domestic region in ASCE. This means that we don’t have as much interaction with one another as in other regions. The Region 8 Governors can help overcome this separation.
I suggest that we, as a Region, need to use conferencing technology (PC and video) to provide regular meetings for section and branch leaders to share ideas. It can’t just be reserved for conferences and annul meetings.
We also need to offer ways for our Life Members, Fellows, Universities, and Students to get more deeply involved. Some sections have great ideas and experience in these areas. Let’s spread the word.
The other area that I would emphasize is the connection to our elected officials. Can we encourage more CEs to run for office or get appointed to various governmental bodies? How can we empower sections to educate and influence our local, State and Federal officials? The Region 8 Governors can provide experience beyond that available from ASCE HQ.
Our infrastructure is critical to our quality of life and economy. We need to educate our officials and the public. Can Region 8 Governors help sections reach out to schools, city councils, State legislators, and others? Certainly!
Finally, Region 8 Governors/Director can work together with section leaders to formulate ideas and positions as input to the ASCE Board of Direction in Washington/Reston. The needs and ideas from Region 8 should be truly reflected in our Society’s direction operations.
I will do whatever I can to support sections and branches in Region 8!
