U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Technical Engineering and Design Guide No. 9
This manual presents guidelines for calculating the vertical displacements and settlement of soil under shallow foundations. Chapters review limitations of these movements and detail guidelines for tests and analyses to estimate immediate, consolidation, and secondary compression settlements of foundations, embankments, pavements, and other structures on cohesionless and cohesive soils for static loading conditions. In addition, this book provides guidance for the evaluation of settlement from earthquakes and repeated loads, as well as the calculation of soil movements in expansive soil and the calculation of settlement in collapsible soil. Methods for minimizing and tolerating soil movements—including remedial techniques such as underpinning with piles, grouting, and slqabjacking to stabilize and repair damaged foundations—are described.
