ASBPE

In conferring its awards in various categories, the ASBPE pays tribute to the efforts of business publication editors and designers and their commitment to excellence in journalism and graphic presentation. The awards recognize the editorial content and graphics of print publications.

In the area of design, the magazine’s art director, Jeff Roth, won a national award in the design category “Contents Page” and a regional award in the “Front Cover-Photo” category for October 2009 cover for the feature “High Flyer.”

A national award in the “News Section” editorial category was given to senior editor Robert L. Reid, associate editor Catherine A. Cardno, Ph.D., and contributing editors Jay Landers, Brian Fortner, and Jeff L. Brown for the “Civil Engineering News” department.

Regional awards in the editorial category include “High flyer,” by senior editor Robert L. Reid, October 2009, for a “Feature Article”; “Amazing Space,” by engineer authors Mark Sarkisian, P.E., S.E., LEED A.P., M.ASCE; Peter Lee, P.E., S.E., LEED A.P., M.ASCE, and Eric Long, P.E., S.E., LEED A.P., August 2009, for a “Feature Article”; “Seeking Zero Energy” by civil engineer authors Roger E. Frechette III, P.E., LEED AP, and Russell Gilchrist, January 2009, for a “Technical Article”; “Game Opener” by civil engineer authors Tarek Ayoubi, P.E., Andrew Stoebner, P.E., and Kenneth Byler, P.E., July 2009, for a “Technical Article”; Jeff L. Brown and Catherine A. Cardno, Ph.D., for the July, August, and September 2009 “Technology” department in the “Regular Department” category; Catherine A. Cardno, Ph.D., for the May, June, and July 2009 “News Briefs” department in the “Regular Department” category; and contributing editor Ray Bert for the July, August, and September “Books” department in the “Regular Department” category.

Each winning entry is given a gold, silver, or bronze award, but those levels are not announced until the awards presentations. The national levels will be announced in a webcast and the regional levels will be announced at a regional banquet sometime in July. The dates of those events have not yet been announced.

APEX

APEX are national awards given in recognition of excellence in editorial content and graphic design. APEX Grand Awards honor the outstanding works in each main category, while APEX Awards of Excellence recognize exceptional entries in each of the subcategories.

An APEX Grand Award (1 of only 100 out of 3,700 entires) was bestowed upon civil engineer authors Daniel A. Sesil, P.E., M.ASCE, Douglas P. Gonzalez, P.E., M.ASCE, and Matthew D. Melrose, P.E., for their article “Newsmaker,” April 2009, in the “Writing” category; Anne Elizabeth Powell, Civil Engineering’s editor in chief, won in the “Magazines and Journals, print, over 32 pages” category; Robert L. Reid won in the “Feature Writing” category for “Under One Green Roof,” January 2009; contributing editor Brett Hansen won in the “Regular Departments and Columns” category for “History Lesson”; Roger E. Frechette III, P.E., LEED AP, and Russell Gilchrist won in the “Technology and Science Writing” category for “Seeking Zero Energy,” January 2009; and Jeff Roth won in the “Design and Layout” category for “Amazing Space,” August 2009, and in the “Calendars, Posters, and Certificates” category for the “Bridges 2010” calendar.

TABPI

TABPI is an organization that endeavors to bring together editors working for English-language publications worldwide and to encourage a common dedication to editorial ethics and excellence.

Jeff Roth won a gold design award in the “Feature Design” category for “Amazing Space,” August 2009, and a silver design award in the “Front Cover-Photograph” category for “Amazing Space”; Robert L. Reid won an honorable mention award in the “Feature Article” category for “Under One Green Roof,” March 2009; Robert L. Reid, Catherine A. Cardno, Ph.D., Jay Landers, Jeff L. Brown, and Brian Fortner won an honorable mention award in the “News Coverage” category for the “Civil Engineering News” department; and Ray Bert won a silver editorial award in the “Department” category for “Books.”

ASBPE

In the area of design, the magazine’s art director, Jan Hilton, won a gold national ASBPE award for the cover of the March 2008 issue and a bronze national ASBPE award for the cover of the January 2008 issue. Jan also won an APEX Award of Excellence for the opening spread of the special report “The Infrastructure Crisis,” published in the January 2008 issue.

In the editorial category, Robert Reid, the magazine’s senior editor, won a national gold ASBPE award for his feature article “Aerial Gateway,” published in the October 2008 issue; Michel Moussard, P.E., and Michel Virlogeux, Ph.D., won a silver national award in the technical article category for their article “French Connection,” published in the November 2008 issue; and contributing editor Jay Landers won a bronze national award for his standing department “Policy Briefing” in the category of government coverage. Contributing editor Brett Hansen won a gold regional award for his standing deparment “History Lesson”; James Guthrie, S.E., Stephen Marusich, S.E., and Geoff Bomba, P.E., won a gold regional award in the technical article category for their feature article “A Saving Isolation,” published in the July 2008 issue; Michael T. McNerney won a silver regional award in the technical article category for his feature article “Precise Prediction,” published in the August 2008 issue; Mark E. Capron won a bronze regional award in the technical article category for his feature article “Plankton Power,” published in the March 2008 issue; senior editor Robert L. Reid won a bronze regional award in the feature writing category for his “Special Report: The Infrastructure Crisis”; and contributing editor Ray Bert won a bronze regional awards for his standing department “Books.”

APEX

APEX are national awards given in recognition of excellence in editorial content and graphic design. APEX Grand Awards honor the outstanding works in each main category, while APEX Awards of Excellence recognize exceptional entries in each of the subcategories. The magazine staff won a Grand Award in the nonprofit category of magazines and journals; Anne Elizabeth Powell, the editor in chief, won an Award of Excellence in the cagegory of Magazines and Journals: Print Over 32 pages; contributing editor Jeff L. Brown won an Award of Excellence in the feature writing category for his feature “Carrying the Torch,” published in the August 2008 issue; senior editor Robert L. Reid won an Award of Excellence in the feature writing category for his “Special Report: The Infrastructure Crisis,” published in the January 2008 issue; Charles R. Welch, Ph.D., M.ASCE, William F. Marcuson III, Ph.D., P.E., Hon.M.ASCE, and Ilker Adiguzel, Ph.D., M.ASCE, won an Award of Excellence in the scientific and environmental writing category for their feature article “Will Supermolecules and Supercomputers Lead to Super Construction Materials?” published in the November 2008 issue; and freelance designer John Meagher won an Award of Excellence in the design category of calendars, posters, and certificates for the “2009 Bridges Calendar.”

TABPI

TABPI is an organization that endeavors to bring together editors working for English-language publications worldwide and to encourage a common dedication to editorial ethics and excellence. The editor in chief, Anne Elizabeth Powell, won an honorable mention in the best single issue category for the January 2008 issue and contributing editor Jeff L. Brown won an honorable mention in the feature article category for “Carrying the Torch,” published in the August 2008 issue. .

The awards were bestowed for work published in 2007.

In the area of design, the magazine’s art director, Jan Hilton, won a national bronze award for the opening spread of the article “Sky Watcher,” which was published in the May 2007 issue. Jan was also recognized with regional awards, garnering a gold award for the cover of the January 2007 issue; a silver award for the August 2007 cover; a bronze award for the November 2007 cover; a bronze award for the graphic design of “Sky Watcher”; a gold award for the opening spread of the feature article “Tower of Power,” which was published in the October 2007 issue; and a silver award for the opening spread of the article “Taking the Lead,” which was published in the December 2007 issue.

In the editorial category, Robert Reid, the magazine’s senior editor, won in the feature writing category for his article “Grand Inspiration,” which was published in the September 2007 issue; Brett Hansen, the associate editor of ASCE News and a contributing editor of the magazine, won for History Lesson, his monthly magazine column; and civil engineers Gonzalo Garcia-Sobrinos, Ignasi Salvador-Villa, ICCP, and Jesus Serradilla-Echarri won a silver award for their feature article “Tower of Power.”

APEX

APEX awards are national awards given in recognition of excellence in editorial content and graphic design. APEX Grand Awards honor the outstanding works in each main category, while APEX Awards of Excellence recognize exceptional entries in each of the subcategories. Jan Hilton won a Grand Award in the area of design and illustration for the Bridges 2007 calendar (designed, edited, and produced by the magazine staff), an Award of Excellence for the cover design of the January 2007 issue of Civil Engineering, and an Award of Excellence for the design and layout of the article “Reconsidering Value Engineering: The Rhode Island School of Design Library Project,” which was published in the February 2007 issue of the magazine. Brett Hansen won an Award of Excellence for his feature article “Gathering Strength,” which was published in the August 2007 issue of the magazine; Robert Reid won an Award of Excellence for “Grand Inspiration”; and the editorial staff and contributing editors won an Award of Excellence for news series writing in the magazine’s Civil Engineering News department.

TABPI

TABPI is an organization that endeavors to bring together editors working for English-language publications worldwide and to encourage a common dedication to editorial ethics and excellence. Brett Hansen won a silver TABPI for his column History Lesson.

FOLIO

The FOLIO Eddie Awards recognize excellence in magazine editorial content. Robert Reid won a silver level Eddie in the category of Best Single Article for his “Special Report: The Infrastructure Crisis,” which was published in the January 2008 issue.

2007

A total of 10 awards for editorial and graphic design excellence—8 from ASBPE and 2 from TABPI.

ASBPE

The magazine’s staff and contributing editors received a national Award of Excellence for its September 2006 Civil Engineering News section. The magazine won a regional Award of Excellence in the technical article category for “Geometry Lesson” by Jason Jones, P.E., Christopher Hauke, P.E., M.ASCE, Andreas Greuel, P.E., M.ASCE, and Brad Saalfeld, P.E., M.ASCE, which was published in the May 2006 issue. In the design category, Jan Hilton won a national award for the opening spread of the article “Counterpoint,” which was published in the March 2006 issue. Jan also won a national award in the feature article design category for her design of the article “Landmark Revisited,” which was published in the April 2006 issue. Additionally, she won four regional design awards for the opening spread of the feature article “Landmark Reinvented”; for the opening spread of the feature article “The Berlin Connection,” which was published in the August 2006 issue; for the cover of the February 2006 issue; and for the cover of the April 2006 issue.

TABPI

Robert Reid won a Gold Award from TABPI in the technical article category for “A Healing Place,” which was published in the February 2006 issue, and Jan won an honorable mention from TABPI for the opening spread of “Landmark Reinvented.”

A total of 10 awards for editorial and graphic design excellence—6 from ASBPE and 4 from APEX.

ASBPE

Jan Hilton won five ASBPE awards for graphics excellence: a national Award of Excellence for the cover of the July 2005 issue; a national Award of Excellence for the opening spread illustration of the feature article “Grand Revival,” published in the August 2005 issue; a national Award of Excellence for the opening spread photograph of the article “Synchronicity,” published in the February 2005 issue; a regional award for the cover of the December 2005 issue; and a regional award for the opening spread of the feature article “Inspired Innovation,” published in the July 2005 issue. Robert Pinghero, P.E., Wayne Ehmann, and Dean Kimball, R.A., won a regional award for editorial excellence for their feature article “Grand Revival.”

APEX

Jan Hilton won an APEX Grand Award for the design of “Grand Revival,” as well as an Award of Excellence in two categories: for the overall cover design of the magazine and for the Bridges 2006 calendar. Anne Elizabeth Powell, the magazine’s Editor in Chief, won an Award of Excellence in the magazine and journal writing category for her feature article “A Grand Plan,” published in the December 2004 issue.

ASBPE

Six awards from ASBPE. Jan Hilton won four awards: a national award for the design of the feature article “A Grand Plan,” published in the December 2004 issue; a national award for the cover photograph of the February 2004 issue; a national award for the cover photograph of the July 2004 issue; and a regional award for the computer-generated cover of the January 2004 issue. Laurie Shuster, the magazine’s Managing Editor, won a regional award for the special report she authored on bridge and tunnel security, which was published in the September 2004 issue; and Walter Antlauf, Dipl-Ing., Francois G. Bernardeau, P.E., and Kevin C. Coates won a regional award for their feature article “Fast Track,” published in the November 2004 issue.

Four regional ASBPE awards. Jan Hilton won two regional Awards of Excellence—one for the cover photograph of the February 2003 issue and one for the cover illustration of the October 2003 issue. Jay Landers, then the magazine’s senior editor, received an Award of Excellence for his feature “Saving the Bay,” published in the January 2003 issue. James Loper, P.E., Keith Almoney, P.E., and Timothy Frederick won an Award of Excellence for their feature article “Flying High.”

Brown and published in the November/December 2002 issue; and a regional Award of Excellence in the design category for the cover of the May 2002 issue designed by Jan Hilton.
