ASCE Journals "Preview Manuscripts" Policy
Accepted papers for all ASCE journals submitted through Editorial Manager, in manuscript form, are posted online, prior to the final, copyedited issue being released online and in print. Posting accepted manuscripts online reduces time to publication by several months thereby disseminating the literature as quickly as possible. Each ASCE journal has a dedicated section to Preview Manuscripts. Participation by authors is optional.
Preview articles are citable. The posted date appears with the title, and the citation ends with the Digital Object Identifier (DOI), an automatically generated unique identifier for intellectual property in the digital environment. A sample citation of a Preview paper follows:
Gao, P. (2008). "Transition between two bed-load transport regimes: Saltation and sheet flow." J. Hydraul. Eng., 10.1061/(ASCE)HY.1943-4774.1234567 (Feb. 15, 2008).
After a paper is posted online, it proceeds through copyediting and production. The final edited and composed version published online is considered the version of record. It bears the original date of posting and DOI in addition to the final publication date, volume, issue, and page numbers. The final, formal citation of a paper in the journal that was first posted as a Preview paper follows:
Gao, P. (2009). "Transition between two bed-load transport regimes: Saltation and sheet flow." J. Hydraul. Eng., 134(3), 340-349, 10.1061/(ASCE)HY.1943-4774.1234567 (Feb. 15, 2008).
After final publication, the manuscript version of a paper is removed from the active list of Preview papers and stored in an accessible, permanent archive, linked to the final version of the article.
Once a paper is posted, no author changes can be made until page proof stage. Any substantive changes an author wishes to make after posting as a Preview Manuscript, including additional paragraphs/wording, changes to data, or modification of abstracts and/or conclusions, will be referred to the Journal editor. If the editor concurs that the requested changes/corrections have a significant/important impact on the science, a correction to the paper will be published in the next available issue.
Preview Manuscripts are included in the ASCE Library. Preview papers are also included in the e-mail notification of new papers, which can be requested through the ASCE Library's email alerting system.
