ASCE Membership Grade Criteria (details)

The guidelines below provide the requirements for the Affiliate Member, Associate Member and Member grades. Please submit as much information on your professional experiences and education as possible to ensure you are placed at the appropriate membership grade. If after you have joined ASCE you are not satisfied with your membership grade, please contact the Membership Applications Administrator.

Member

 Bachelor's degree from a school having an
 ABET/EAC accredited civil engineering or
 related engineering program

  • Licensed professional engineer or
    professional land surveyor; OR
  • Five years of responsible charge of engineering experience AND
    three (3) references  
 

 Master's or doctorate degree in civil
 engineering from an ABET/EAC
  accredited school

  • Licensed professional engineer or
    professional land surveyor; OR
  • Four years of responsible charge of
    engineering experiences (three years with Ph.D.) AND three (3) references 
 

  Degree from a non-ABET/EAC or
  ABET/TAC accredited four (or more)
  year curriculum in engineering,
  engineering technology, or related
  science

  • Legally registered engineer or land
    surveyor AND five years of responsible charge of engineering experience 
 

  No degree

  • Licensed professional engineer or
    professional land surveyor with responsible charge for at least ten years subsequent to receiving licensure AND three references
    from ASCE Members or Fellows  
 

  Current member in an equivalent grade
  of an engineering society with which
  ASCE has a current reciprocal
  membership agreement

  • Copy of current membership card in 
    engineering society
    (Must show current grade of membership)  
 

  No degree

  • Licensure in the United States as a
    Professional Engineer (P.E.) or
    Land Surveyor (L.S. or R.L.S.)  
 

Associate Member

  Degree from a non-ABET/EAC or
  ABET/TAC accredited four (or more)
  year curriculum in engineering,
  engineering technology, or related
  science

  • Legally certified as an Engineer Intern (E.I.), Engineer-In-Training (E.I.T.), or Land Surveyor-In-Training (L.S.I.T.) 
 

  Bachelor's degree from a school having
  an ABET/EAC accredited or substantially
  equivalent civil engineering or related
  engineering program

  • No other requirements
 

  Current member in an equivalent grade
  of an engineering society with which
  ASCE has a current reciprocal
  membership agreement

  • Copy of current membership card in
    engineering society (Must show
    current grade of membership)
 

Affiliate Member

  Must have an interest in advancing
  the purpose and objectives of ASCE
  and not be eligible for Student
  Member grade

  • No other requirements
