This is an exciting time for the civil engineering community. The prestigious Outstanding Projects and Leaders (OPAL) Awards celebration marks an exhilarating high point each year when the profession devotes a special evening to celebrate and recognize the remarkable achievements of civil engineers and civil engineering. This year’s April 23 event was no exception!
In addition to OPAL, numerous key ASCE initiatives rely on the Foundation for funding. These include the ExCEEd workshop, the Congressional Fellows Program, Kids and Careers initiatives, and the National Concrete Canoe Competition. Such programs help build a stronger profession to meet tomorrow's national and global challenges. By funding them, the Foundation helps to: better educate engineers for tomorrow’s global economy; attract more young people to civil engineering; and promote renewed infrastructure and a greener future.
With the recent excitement of OPAL fresh in our minds, now is the perfect time for me to express my excitement that our Foundation is moving forward with greater momentum to help build a stronger profession.
- The Foundation Board has recently expanded the scope of the Foundation by revising its mission, establishing a new vision and providing new direction for our future.
- The Foundation has updated our Web pages and added online donation capability. Also, you can now find out if your company will match your gift to the Foundation by clicking here.
- With new communications tools, we look forward to recognizing our supporters through newsletters, Web pages and publications.
Never before has civil engineering been more in the limelight, as the importance of a strong resilient infrastructure continues to be highlighted as critical to our nation’s well-being. As we all do what we can to weather tough economic times, your Foundation seeks to continue to strengthen and build resources to support a profession that our nation depends upon now more than ever.
As OPAL 2009 just reminded us, this spring we have a lot to celebrate! We applaud and celebrate all our sponsors and donors, whose continued support make many essential and innovative activities possible and successful.
