Support the TRIP Bonds Act of 2011
Senator Ron Wyden (D-OR) has drafted legislation to provide the nation with $50 billion in new transportation infrastructure financing authority. The Transportation and Regional Infrastructure Project (TRIP) Bonds Act of 2011 is a one-time bonding program that will empower states and localities to complete significant infrastructure projects across various modes of transportation including:
- Roads
- Rail
- Transit
- Ports
- Inland waterways.
This program is intended to fill a similar need as the Build America Bonds http://wyden.senate.gov/issues/issue/?id=b70b0986-1657-404d-a344-2f069c13b9fb program which expired in 2010.
These additional funds would complement the core federal transportation programs and assist states in reducing the large backlog of transportation infrastructure projects which would create jobs and generate economic growth by helping our country maintain its competitive footing, improve mobility and save lives. Because the cost to maintain and improve our nation’s transportation infrastructure far exceeds available funds, TRIP Bonds provide a fiscally prudent transportation financing tool to states and localities for needed capital infrastructure investments.

Senator Wyden has been working with ASCE staff to gain support for the TRIP Bond program from his Senate colleagues. Senator Wyden would like individual ASCE members to sign on to a letter he plans to send to each of his Senate colleagues asking for their support of the TRIP Bonds Act of 2011.
Please review the letter of support and sign on to show your support for the nation’s surface transportation infrastructure. As representatives of the profession most responsible for the built environment, ASCE members must be a voice in the national debate on infrastructure.
