ASCE Energy Division

 (Authorized as Power Division on June 20, 1922; name changed to Energy Division on July 14, 1978) Purpose: to promote the integrated planning and management of efficient energy systems consistent with social, economic, and environmental objectives and constraints; to advance the role of the civil engineer in the siting, design, construction and operation of facilities for the extraction, conversion, distribution, and use of energy resources; to provide, through publications, technical committee activities and meetings, leadership within ASCE on technical, professional and policy issues that bear on energy; and to encourage cooperation with other organizations with similar goals. 

The mission of the ASCE Energy Division is to provide leadership on technical, professional and policy issues that bear on energy in all its forms and uses.  To do this, the Energy Division will: 

  • Promote the integrated planning and management of safe, efficient energy systems consistent with social, economic and environmental objectives and constraints;
  • Advance the role of the civil engineer in the siting, design, construction, and operation of facilities for the extraction, conversion, generation, distribution, and use of sustainable energy resources;
  • Collaborate with other ASCE units and external organizations with similar goals.

The benefits of participation in the ASCE Energy Division, particularly on the Technical Committees are:

  • mentoring of (energy) industry personnel,
  • networking opportunities for problem solving,
  • technology transfer and forums for discussing (energy) industry problems and solutions, and
  • the advancement of civil engineering aspects of generation in the energy industry

In order to achieve our mission the Energy Division is organized by the Energy Division Executive Committee which:

  • coordinates the overall activities of the Division 
  • interfaces with Society management and staff, 
  • organizes Energy Division participation in conventions, and 
  • focuses larger Society goals into task objectives for the other committees.

The primary work of the Energy Division is accomplished through the activities of four technical committees.
