History & Heritage Committee, Conference Call Meeting, June 20, 2014

The H&HC met via telephone from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. First on the agenda was consideration of the re-submitted nomination for the Saint Anthony Falls Laboratory in Minnesota for a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark (NHCEL). The original nomination had been referred back to the section requesting additional information. Richard Wiltshire presented the submission noting that new information presented fell short of what was requested. The Committee voted against the nomination because the package failed to present convincing evidence to support national landmark status. It was referred back to the Section with a recommendation for local landmark consideration. Subsequently, in July, the Section informed the Committee that it was moving forward with designating the Saint Anthony Falls Laboratory as a Minnesota State Civil Engineering Landmark.

A progress update was provided by Chairman, Bernie Dennis, on the History Sessions planned for the October ASCE Annual Conference to be held in Panama celebrating the 100th anniversary of the opening of the Panama Canal. Ten papers were proposed and will be presented in four sessions at the conference. The papers are being finalized for publication by ASCE in a proceedings volume that will approach 500 pages.

Bernie reported on his participation in a conference call of the Committee for Advancement of the Profession (CAP). Due to ASCE’s structural reorganization in 2012, the H&HC is now a constituent committee of CAP. CAP is planning a face-to-face meeting of constituent committees in January or February 2015. Subsequently, CAP announced that the meeting will be held on January 23-25, 2015 in Nashville.

Efforts continue with the Committee's oral history project interview with ASCE Past President, Dr. Delon Hampton, which will be conducted in the upcoming months by Bernie Dennis.

Given that this was probably the last meeting that ASCE H&HC Staff Coordinator Carol Reese will participate in prior to her retirement in September, the Committee voted to prepare a Certificate of Appreciation for her many years of service to the History & Heritage Committee.
