Region 4 Governor
Theresa E. Harrison, P.E., Senior Civil Engineer at Lawson-Fisher Associates P.C. in South Bend, Ind., is a Governor of Region 4 of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). Region 4, one of the Society’s ten regional governing boards, represents members from Arkansas, Indiana, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia. She started her first and second 3-year tenures as a Regional Governor in October 2007 and October 2010, respectively. She is also serving Region 4 as Strategic Management Coordinator. On October 1, 2009, Harrison started her 3-year appointment to the Committee on Diversity and Inclusion.
As a senior civil engineer at Lawson-Fisher Associates P.C., Harrison is a member of the company’s Board of Direction, is the Corporate Safety Officer and is responsible for all facets of design, including permitting, contract documents, environmental impact reports, plans, specifications and cost estimates. She has participated in various projects, including the design of pedestrian and bicycle paths, highway realignment and widening, and added lanes and intersection signalization and modernization. In addition to her work at Lawson-Fisher, Harrison was an adjunct assistant professor at the University of Notre Dame, where she taught “Introduction to Transportation Engineering” for six years. Prior to her work with Lawson-Fisher, Harrison was an assistant city engineer for the city of Mishawaka, IN.
Harrison has been an active ASCE member since college and has served as president of both ASCE’s Indiana Section and its North Central Branch. In addition to her volunteer work with ASCE, she is a member of ASCE’s Transportation and Development Institute, the Institute of Transportation Engineers and the American Public Works Association. Locally, Harrison has participated in the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Team in Training, mentored students in the South Bend Community Schools’ Dream Team for Unity mentoring program and participated in or facilitated innumerable civil engineering outreach activities and career day presentations. She is also an active board member and officer of the University of Michigan Alumni Association’s Michiana Club.
Harrison received both her bachelor and master degrees in civil engineering from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. A licensed professional engineer in Indiana and Michigan, she is a resident of Niles, Mich.
She and her husband, Gregory (a mechanical engineer) have three children; Gabriella (University of Michigan Graduate, mechanical engineer), Christopher (graduate student at Ball State University, studying Architecture) and Amelia (senior engineering student at the University of Michigan, studying naval architecture and marine engineering and a member of the University of Michigan Marching Band Drumline)!
