In 2008, ASCE led a coalition of more than 60 partners from the engineering and educational communities to help shape the conversation about engineering by embarking on Engineer Your Life!, an awareness campaign designed to encourage academically prepared girls to enroll in engineering programs. 2012 ProjectThe under-representation of engineers in public office has a profound impact on policymaking and will continue to do so if more engineers are not involved in the process and encouraged to run for public office. Due to their vast knowledge on issues that affect the public well being, engineers have a great deal to offer the political arena, including championing much-needed improvements to the infrastructure in this country. Enter ASCE’s Key Contact Program, providing ASCE members with information resources to engage in the public policy process, and the 2012 Project, a non-partisan, national campaign to increase the number of women in legislative office by identifying and engaging accomplished women from under-represented fields and industries like engineering.

WEPAN logoWomen in Engineering ProActive Network (WEPAN) is a national not-for-profit organization with over 600 members from engineering schools, small businesses, Fortune 500 corporations, and non-profit organizations. WEPAN works to transform culture in engineering education to attract, retain, and graduate women. With a clear focus on research-based issues and solutions, WEPAN helps its members develop a highly prepared, diverse engineering workforce for tomorrow.

WEPAN’s network of members on 150 college and university campuses reaches 42,890 female engineering students or 60% of the female engineering students through campus-based programs and initiatives (WEPAN membership data and American Society of Engineering Educators [ASEE] Data Management System data). WEPAN’s Institutional Members have an average 15% higher enrollment of women in engineering, than non-member campuses.

Journal of Women and Minorities in Science and Engineering

JWMSE logoDesigned as a unique and much-needed resource for educators, managers, and policymakers, the Journal of Women and Minorities in Science and Engineering publishes original, peer-reviewed papers that report innovative ideas and programs for classroom teachers, scientific studies, and formulation of concepts related to the education, recruitment, and retention of under-represented groups in science and engineering. Discipline-specific issues related to women and minorities are consolidated to address the entire educational environment from K through post-graduate and on to continuing education. Included are explorations of feminist teaching methods, black student/white teacher interactions, cultural phenomena that affect classroom climate, and new questions to ask of science. The journal includes pertinent book reviews and "reports from the field" by women and men of color in academe, business, industry, and federal and state agencies.

Outreach 4 Change4Δ is a collaboration of four leading professional societies: the American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES), the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) and the Society of Women Engineers (SWE).

Created with funding from the National Science Foundation (grant HRD0937306), 4Δ is designed to make engineering a possibility for girls of all races and ethnicities. Specifically, we are working to increase the outreach capacity and effectiveness among the staff and volunteers of professional engineering societies in reaching girls.
