Proceedings of a session on foundations and substructures in cold regions at the ASCE National Convention, held in Minneapolis, Minnesota, October 5-8, 1997. Sponsored by the Geo-Institute of ASCE.
This Geotechnical Special Publication contains four papers reporting recent research and experience involving foundations and substructures exposed to freezing and permafrost conditions. Because the traditional approach of embedding foundations or substructures below the historical depth of the frost penetration is not the most cost-effective solution in some areas, new design and construction methods are being developed. Papers discuss these new methods and the approach of modifying the critical elements needed for the frost action to occur. One paper describes the status of the proposed ASCE standard on frost-protected shallow foundations.
