Proceedings of a conference on digital image processing, held in Kona, Hawaii, February 28-March 5, 1993. Sponsored by the Engineering Foundation; National Science Foundation.

This collection contains 38 papers providing a comprehensive and up-to-date perspective for the use of digital image processing and analysis techniques in solving civil engineering problems.  Although image processing and analysis methods have been used extensively in other disciplines for some time, only in the past few years has the potential impact for civil engineering has been recognized. Papers were presented on digitizing and digital information management; morphologic operations and analysis; image interpretation and recognition; and applications. Topics include: engineering document scanning, pavement distress assessment, site evaluation using satellite imagery, studies of crack propagation and microstructure in cement-based materials, and evaluations of soil fabric.
