ASCE & Sustainability

As the stewards of society's physical infrastructure, civil engineers must lead the next shift in sustainable planning, design and construction. Here's how ASCE defines sustainability:
A set of environmental, economic and social conditions in which all of society has the capacity and opportunity to maintain and improve its quality of life indefinitely without degrading the quantity, quality or availability of natural, economic, and social resources.

Review the 2014 National Climate Assessment

NCA logo 220
Conducted every four years, the National Climate Assessment is a key resource for understanding and communicating climate change science and its effects across the United States. Its findings influence federal science priorities and are used by U.S. engineers, citizens, communities, and businesses as they create more sustainable and environmentally sound plans for the nation’s future. From Jan. 15 to Feb. 15, civil engineers have an opportunity to review the draft 2013 assessment. You will get an advance look at its findings and be able to make recommendations for its improvement, including any additional research needed. Find out how and where you can act now to provide your input to this influential federal report.

Version 2.0 of Sustainable Infrastructure Rating System

The Envision™ rating system is a project assessment and guidance tool for sustainable infrastructure design. It is an objective framework of criteria and performance achievements that helps users identify ways in which sustainable approaches can be used to plan, design, construct, and operate infrastructure projects. Envision™ provides an opportunity for infrastructure owners and designers to be recognized for using a life cycle approach, working with communities, and using a restorative approach to infrastructure projects.
