Committee on Younger Members Recognizes 21 Employers

February 2010 Volume 35, Number 2

Short Takes

As a way of fostering the participation of younger members in the Society’s activities, ASCE’s Committee on Younger Members developed an awards program to help sections and branches pay tribute to employers that encourage their young engineers to become actively involved in the Society. After careful consideration by the committee, 19 companies have been named recipients of the 2009 Employer Recognition Award. Two other employers, one in the private sector and one in the public sector, are being honored with the Superior Employer Recognition Award.

The Superior Employer Recognition Award for a private employer has been accorded to the Chapman Technical Group, of St. Albans, West Virginia. All of the firm’s young engineers are members of ASCE, and the company supports continuing education both financially and by providing flexibility in working hours and workloads. It also encourages professional growth by helping young employees become involved in marketing efforts. Moreover, it funds attendance at ASCE events and provides paid time off for such outreach efforts as the West Point Bridge Design Contest.

The City of Los Angeles’s Bureau of Engineering receives the Superior Employer Recognition Award in the public-sector category. Approximately 50 percent of the bureau’s 60 young engineers are members of ASCE. The bureau’s engineers are required to complete extensive training, including a 15-week project management course. The bureau encourages participation in professional organizations and asks young engineers during the interview process how they plan to contribute to the profession. Four members of the Younger Member Forum of the Los Angeles Section’s Metropolitan Los Angeles Branch are employed by the bureau.

The 19 employers honored with the Employer Recognition Award are as follows: aecom, headquartered in Los Angeles; Bain Medina Bain, Inc., of San Antonio; Barge Waggoner Sumner & Cannon, Inc., of Nashville, Tennessee; the Las Vegas office of Black & Veatch; Blackburn Consulting, Inc., of West Sacramento, California; Brown & Gay Engineers, Inc., of Houston; Brown and Caldwell, of Las Vegas; the Las Vegas office of Carollo Engineers; the Walnut Creek, California, office of Carollo Engineers; Fugro West, Inc., of Ventura, California; Keck & Wood, Inc., of Rock Hill, South Carolina; Langan Engineering & Environmental Services, Inc., of New York City; LJA Engineering & Surveying, Inc., of Houston; Nitsch Engineering, Inc., of Boston; NTH Consultants, Ltd., of Detroit; Parsons Transportation Group, of Memphis, Tennessee; Terracon Consultants, Inc., of Houston; Traffic Planning and Design, Inc., of Center Valley, Pennsylvania; and Woodard & Curran, of Portland, Maine.
