In an address to the Economic Club of Washington on Thursday, House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) called on the joint congressional committee that is tasked with cutting $1.2 trillion from the Federal budget. During his remarks the Speaker offered a plan to link the next highway bill to an expansion of energy production in order to create jobs. Speaker Boehner stated that “another thing we can do is in the area of transportation and infrastructure” and that he is “not opposed to responsible spending to repair and improve infrastructure.”
The recommendations of the so-called 12-member “super committee” are due to Congress by November 23. ASCE has been meeting with super committee member offices to discuss the vital role that infrastructure should play in a final proposal.
