2012 Central Regional Younger Member Council Summary

The Kansas City Younger Member Group (YMG) was proud to host the Central Region Younger Member Council (YMC) on February 10 and 11. Region 3,6, and 7, delegates descended upon the Intercontinental Hotel on the Country Club Plaza in Kansas City, MO.
On Friday morning, the conference began with an ice breaker activity with Section and Branch Leaders followed by an overview of ASCE. Afterwards the Younger Members broke off for some Central Region YMC specific sessions like “How to get involved in the 2012 Elections” presented by Leslie Nolen, ASCE Director of Grassroots Advocacy, “ASCE Community Service” presented by Reed Brockman, P.E., M.ASCE, and “Kit Bond Cable-stayed Bridge Construction” presented by Brian Kidwell, P.E., MoDOT Assistant District Engineer. The group also participated in roundtable dicussions on School Outreach, Community Service, Professional Development, Membership and Recruiting, and Student Chapter Interaction.
Saturday began with a breakfast and networking session with 2010 ASCE President Blaine Leonard, P.E., D.GE, F.ASCE. Following breakfast, there was a Town Hall meeting with the ASCE Presidential Candidates, an open mike session with Society Leaders, and the YMC Business Meeting. On Saturday afternoon, younger members had the opportunity to tour the KC Star building and newspaper production facility and visit the Boulevard Brewing facility.
Younger Member award recipients at the conference included Andres Torres, P.E., Nebraska Section - Outstanding Younger Member in Community Activities; Bridget Schuh, P.E., Wisconsin Section Southeast Branch - Outstanding Younger Member in the Private Sector, Mike Winckler, P.E., Kansas City Section - Outstanding Younger Member in the Public Sector, and Wisconsin Section Southeast Branch - Outstanding Younger Member Group Community Service Project.
