Committee on Younger Members

What does CYM do?

The Committee on Younger Members (CYM) was established by ASCE to encourage Younger Members (35 and under) to be involved in ASCE and help them grow in the profession. CYM does this by listening to Younger Members (YMs) and Younger Member Groups (YMGs); helping resolve concerns of YMs/YMGs; offering training programs for leadership and soft skills; publishing resources and a newsletter; and fostering interaction between YMs/YMGs and Section, Branches, Younger Member Councils, and Student Organizations. CYM also helps plan events like the Younger Member Councils, assists YMGs as needed, and gives awards to Younger Members and the employers who support them.  CYM is here to be a resource for all things related to Younger Members – check out the links to the left to see some of our many offerings.  If you are a Younger Member, CYM is here to represent YOU to the Society Board of Direction.

Who is on CYM?

There are seven full members who fill geographic or task related positions including: Eastern Geographic Member, Central Geographic Member, Western Geographic Member, International and Coordination Member, Publications Member, Student Relations Member, and Younger Member Leadership Symposium (YMLS) Member.  These seven serve four year terms and are assisted by staff contact Daryl Morais and a varying number of Corresponding Members. While Corresponding Members do not usually attend the face-to-face meetings CYM holds, they help with various projects like writing articles for the newsletter, distributing/collecting information to/from YMGs, helping YMGs work with Student Chapters, and serving as a resource for their fellow YMs. Contact information can be found below; if you are not sure which Region you are in, see the Region map here.

When does CYM meet?

CYM generally has two face-to-face meetings each year, in the spring and fall.  Corresponding Members – or any Members of ASCE, for that matter – are welcome to attend. Conference calls are held the remaining months of the year.  If you would like more information or have items for CYM to discuss at the next meeting, please email Daryl Morais

Can I join CYM?

Each year, at least two full members of CYM are replaced. To maintain committee continuity, new member applicants apply more than a year in advance of their three year term beginning (October 1, 2014).  Accepted members will serve as a Corresponding Member starting in October 2013.  New members to the committee for 2014 are the Central Geographic Member and the Programming Member. Application information will be posted in May.

Corresponding Members serve one-year, renewable terms. The number of positions varies, and the more, the merrier. Nomination forms for terms beginning October 1, 2013 will be available in May.

If you have any questions, contact Daryl Morais or one of the CYM members listed below.
