This workshop will provide an introduction to APM systems, including the history, terminology, technology varieties, characteristics, standards, and applications. It will also cover planning and engineering considerations, procurement, and costs. It is an ideal introduction to the Conference for those attendees who have limited familiarity with APMs. Experienced APM planners and engineers will also find it informative.

William J. Sproule has almost 35 years' experience in government, consulting, university teaching, and research in Canada and the United States.He received his Ph.D. from Michigan State University and is currently a Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Michigan Tech University.He has been involved in APM research for many years, and is a former chair of the ASCE APM Committee, and proceedings co-editor for four APM Conferences.

William H. Leder's career spans 35 years in the public and private sectors, where he has focused on public transit and airport planning and engineering with an emphasis on APMs.He holds an MSCE from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and is the 2004 recipient of the prestigious ASCE Horonjeff Award for his contributions in air transportation.He currently serves as an adjunct professor and distinguished practitioner-in-residence in Civil and Environmental Engineering at Michigan Tech University, where he teaches public transit, leads senior design projects, and is involved in transportation research.

Plan to attend the opening session of the 10th International Conference on Automated People Movers. Invited speakers include Governor Jeb Bush and Representative John Mica. Officials from Orlando International Airport and ASCE will also extend a welcome to attendees. Philip Castellana, President of Lea+Elliott, Inc., will present an overview of the state of the APM industry as it is 'Moving Into the Mainstream."
