Keynote Address:
Fallingwater: Reconstruction of an Architectural Masterpiece
Mel Garber, Senior Project Manager, Robert Silman Associates
Fallingwater, the creation of Frank Lloyd Wright, has been an American icon since its creation in 1937. However, the structure had a critical flaw. The ever-drooping terraces and widening cracks worried the owner, who deeded the house to the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy in 1963. In 1994, its directors hired Silman's engineers to conduct nondestructive testing of its structural members and develop a plan to save the landmark from its incipient failure. Mel Garber will discuss the tests, findings, and innovative approach taken to correct the structural deficit.
