Jackson, P.E., F.ASCE will introduce this year’s Honorary
Members and the Hoover Medal will be presented to Charles
H. Thornton, Ph.D., P.E., Hon.M.ASCE. The medal, instituted
to commemorate the civic and humanitarian achievements of
US President Herbert Hoover, Hon.M.ASCE, and “Awarded by
Engineers to a Fellow Engineer for Distinguished Public
Service,” is entrusted to the American Society of Mechanical
Engineers and administered by the Hoover Medal Board of
Award, consisting of representatives of the American
Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers,
Inc.; the American Society of Mechanical Engineers; the
American Institute of Chemical Engineers; the Institute

and structural failure analysis, Thornton has
participated in engineering team investigations not only of the
World Trade Center collapse, but also the Hartford Coliseum roof;
the scaffold at Pleasants Power Station, WV; and New York State

government’s assessment of the bombing of the Alfred B. Murrah
building in Oklahoma City.

Gala Banquet
ASCE’s year-long 150th Anniversary celebration reaches
a fitting crescendo with a grand GALA!
The evening’s events include recognition of ASCE’s new
President and President-elect and a reception for the new
president prior to dinner. Following
dessert and coffee, we will be treated
to a performance of political
satire cleverly set to music by
Washington’s incomparable troupe,
The Capitol Steps.
We are able to seat 1,000 guests on a first-come,
first-serve basis. Because of the importance
of this event to the ASCE community, it is expected to sell out early.
To avoid disappointment, we urge you to register as soon as possible. Gala
Banquet tickets are included in all ASCE and CERF/IIEC Full, and
Spouse/Guest Registrations. Black Tie Optional.
Banquet Seating: All seating for the Gala Banquet is reserved. Those who
wish to dine together should make their requests when selecting seating
assignments at the Banquet Reservation Desk in the Convention Center
during registration hours. Banquet seating reservations will close on
Tuesday, November 5 at 6:00 PM.
Banquet Menu: At registration, Gala Banquet attendees are asked to select
from these three entrées: Filet Mignon, Honey-Glazed Grilled Salmon, or
Vegetarian. Those who do not specify an entrée will be served Filet Mignon.
Tickets: $90.
