Presentation of the 2002 Henry L. Michel Award to Dr. Benedict R. Schwegler, Jr.

Vice President and Chief Scientist, Walt Disney Imagineering, Research & Development, Inc.

Dr. Schwegler has been involved in nearly all of Walt Disney Imagineering's construction projects over the past 19 years. In his current position, he created and manages the 4D Simulation-based Design Team, which makes the construction and project planning process interactive, visually appealing, fun and creative as a computer game. To accomplish this, his team develops new software tools and formal information models to enable integration of a wide variety of design, construction, and operational data for all capital facility projects of The Walt Disney Company, especially theme parks and resorts. His team has also developed Integrated Infrastructure models that result in the most energy-efficient theme park and resort design ever built; novel water treatment technologies that result in the first closed-loop control of wastewater treatment plants; and next-generation fireworks.

Dr. Schwegler is a member of the CERF Corporate Advisory Board, Co-Chair of CERF's ad-hoc working group on integration of IT into the construction industry, and former National Chairman of CERF's Environmental Technology Evaluation Center (EvTEC). Dr. Schwegler earned his doctorate from UCLA.
