Geo-Institute Program

Karl Terzaghi Lecture

Be present for delivery of the geotechnical field?s prestigious Karl Terzaghi lecture, which recognizes outstanding contributions to knowledge of soil mechanics, subsurface/earthwork engineering, and subsurface/earthwork construction. This year, Vic Milligan will deliver the Karl Terzaghi Lecture.

Presentation: Some Uncertainties in Embankment Dam Engineering

Victor Milligan was educated at Queen?s University, Belfast, Ireland, receiving a B.Sc. in 1951 and a M.Sc. in 1952. After working on hydroelectric construction in Scotland and doing postgraduate research at Purdue University, Milligan emigrated to Canada. In 1960, he and Dr. Hugh Golder formed Golder Associates, which now has more than 80 offices worldwide. After serving as President, Chief Executive, and Chairman, Milligan retired in 1994 and now acts as a consultant to the firm. He has been involved in the Canadian Geotechnical Society, is a Past Vice President for North America of the International Society of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering, and was founding editor of the Canadian Geotechnical Journal in 1964. Elected Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering in 1994, he was inducted as a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in London, England in November 2001.
