The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal in Georgetown
Take a good look at the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal (C&O) by land and by water. Part of this tour will be by National Park Service canal boat. Work on the canal commenced in 1828 and it was difficult work that required construction of dry-laid stone retaining walls and a deep cut with extensive blasting through rock. C&O Chief Engineer Judge Wright constructed a mole to use the borrow material removed from this cut. Cut stone for the locks was hauled from Aquia, 70 miles to the south. The same quarries provided building stone for the White House and Capitol. Our tour will include the Mole, Outlet Lock, and Tumbling Dam; Aquia Locks; and the Potomac Aqueduct Bridge. In Georgetown, Project Manager Robert Kapsch will discuss NPS plans to rehabilitate the retaining walls without loss of historic appearance. Tour participants will get a chance to sharpen their Early American Civil Engineering vocabulary on terms such as "hollow quoins," "miter sills," and "wicket gates"!
Limited to 25 participants. Cost per person: $35.
(Includes transportation and boxed lunch.)

ASCE's 150th Anniversary Gala Banquet
We conclude our 150th Anniversary Celebration with a stirring Gala Banquet, one for the record books! The celebration reaches a crescendo after dinner, with a program that is thoroughly Washington DC, with a current, topical, musical political satire by The Capitol Steps.
We are able to seat 1,000 guests on a first-come, first-served basis. Because of the importance of this event to the ASCE community, it is expected to sell out early. To avoid disappointment, we urge you to register as soon as possible. Gala Banquet tickets are included in ASCE and CERF/IIEC Full and Spouse/Guest Registrations.
