Your Invitation

Join Us for “Building a Better World,”
Washington DC 2002 Civil Engineering Conference " Exposition... and more!

Dear Colleague:

ASCE will be 150 years old on November 5, 2002. We’ve been celebrating in various ways all year. What’s the right time and place for a grand finale?

Steeped in history, rich in the arts, museums, and culture, bubbling with politics, and exquisitely beautiful, Washington DC is a “signature” city, a symbol of the United States of America to those around the world. There could be no better place to host ASCE’s Sesquicentennial Meeting than in this dynamic setting, just minutes from ASCE’s World Headquarters, and no better time than our actual 150th birthday.

The Washington DC 2002 Civil Engineering Conference and Exposition, November 3-7, covers current and pressing issues, with a Keynote by NBC’s Tim Russert, Moderator of “Meet the Press,” commenting on events that shape our lives, and an important Address by President George W. Bush (invited). We have made special efforts to achieve Technical Sessions with multi-disciplinary integration to focus on complex, real-world situations, and feature a “SuperTrack” on Professional and Practice Issues. We offer abundant local tours, both structured and self-guided, formal and informal.

Several Cabinet officers and senior administration officials will share insights with us. Our classic CEO Forum will take place as the Federal Forum, featuring the Chief of Engineers and Commanding General of the US Army Corps of Engineers, the Commander of the Naval Facilities Engineering Command, and the heads of facilities operations for General Services Administration, Department of State, and Smithsonian Institution.

We will host engineers and engineering society leaders from around the world at an International Roundtable. All of the ASCE “Corporate Family” – our Institutes, CERF, ASCE Foundation, Foundation for Professional Practice, TAC, CPP, IAC, Government Relations, and others – will participate in our program in some way. This is most appropriate for a Society-wide celebration of 15 decades of Civil Engineering excellence and leadership.

For the first time, we will have CE World, a web-based virtual conference to enhance our meeting. While on-site attendees get much more than virtual participants, CE World will allow engineers all over the globe to be involved at their desktops via real-time webcasting of important industry events as they occur at the Conference.

150th Anniversary festivities permeate the proceedings, capped by an Anniversary Celebration on November 4 AND a Gala Banquet on November 6, with The Capitol Steps, DC’s legendary musical political satirists.

If this isn’t enough to entice you to join us, consider this value-added feature: The Infrastructure Security Partnership (TISP) Congress on Infrastructure Security for the Built Environment (ISBE), a comprehensive look at both natural disaster and terrorist threats and responses. All ASCE and CERF event full registrants are automatically registered for the historic first ISBE Congress. This is an opportunity for you and your fellow engineers to put your expertise to work helping secure our nation’s critical infrastructure against future terrorist attacks.

The ISBE Congress will be produced by ASCE in concert with our 2002 Annual Conference. It takes place November 5-7 in the same facilities, with shared events and exhibit hall – and adds 25 additional sessions on infrastructure security. Among other notable features is a scheduled address by Office of Homeland Security Director Tom Ridge (invited).

Clearly, there’s a lot of value for the education dollar for Civil Engineers in Washington DC this November.

Our founders could not have foreseen that our 150th Anniversary would fall on what is, in 2002, Election Day. For our intelligent membership, it’s not a big problem to get an absentee ballot* when you’ve got an important meeting to attend – so do so, exercise your citizenship and vote – but plan to be in Washington DC on Election Day to learn and celebrate with ASCE and TISP.

We promise you, this is going to be an unusually full and very rewarding week. We look forward to seeing you here.

Sincerely,

Stafford E. Thornton, P.E., F.ASCE
ASCE President 1995
Conference Chair

J. A. “Jay” Padgett, Jr., P.E., F.ASCE
