Continental Breakfast & Lunch 1:30 PM - 5:30 PM TECHNICAL TOUR:Metro Nashville District Energy System & TDOT Transportation Management Center Our tour will take you to two fascinating state-of-the-art engineering operations in Nashville. The Metro Nashville District Energy System (DES) has provided heating and cooling from its central plant to nearly 40 buildings in downtown Nashville for nearly three decades. The current facility, operated by Nashville Thermal Transfer Corporation (NTTC), is undergoing improvements and a new facility is sched-uled to begin operation in late 2003. At the central plant, natural gas produces steam, hot water, and chilled water that are piped through an underground network for space and water heating and air conditioning. The individual buildings don't need their own boilers, furnaces, hot water heaters, chillers, or air conditioners. DES does that work for them. The site of the new 43,450-sq.-ft. Energy Generation Facility (EGF) is south of the existing NTTC plant. The new EGF could save Nashville about $66.9 million by 2014 and lower heating/cooling costs for downtown customers at no cost to taxpayers, because the project is financed by revenue bonds and supported by revenue from sale of the chilled water and steam. (See: http://www.nashville.gov/des/about_des.htm) In addition, you are invited to see first-hand the Tennessee Department of Transportation's Intelligent Transportation System, which is housed in a new Transportation Management Center, opened in Spring 2003. It is from this Center's 2,000-sq.-ft. Operations Control Room - with its notable video wall that all the state's interstate highway traffic cameras are monitored to spot problems and improve response to incidents. Our tour will begin with a short presentation on the TDOT ITS System in the Nashville Region and other cities in the state, and information on TDOT's Freeway Service Patrol Program (HELP). (See http://www.tdot.state.tn.us/its/tmcpage.htm) Cost: $15 per person (Minimum 40 persons) 8:30 AM - 9:30 AM ASCE Award Winners' Breakfast By invitation only. 9:30 AM - 10:00 AM REFRESHMENT BREAK 10:00 AM - 12 NOON ASCE Annual Business Meeting, Awards Presentation & Presidential Inauguration All ASCE members are encouraged to attend!
