Professional Qualifications
Is the continuing competence of future civil engineers and CE technologists important to you? How should the civil engineering curriculum be revised to meet the challenges facing the licensed professional? What should be the future knowledge requirements for the practice of civil engineering? What is "good teaching" and how should it be rewarded? How can/should practitioners get involved in education? Who is responsible for training our next generation? How do we promote good ethical decision-making? Answers to these and other questions about civil engineering and CE technology education will develop in discussions in this track. Share in the discussions!

Leadership & Management
Emerging issues in leading people and managing organizations are the focus of these sessions. Explore ethics on the home front and abroad. Learn about technology and practices for better management of the organization, including asset management and customer relations management. Examine human resource issues of employment, such as diversity in the workforce and hiring and retaining quality engineers. See what it takes to be a leader, from the non-technical activities in your education to later in your career to leading in society. Walk away a more effective leader and manager!

Application of New Technology
The new technology track offers great sessions on civil engineering applications of technology. Very timely topics in project planning, transportation, disaster management, energy production and water quality, Internet-assisted design, and visualization! Individual presentations range from space mission planning to Europa to panel discussions on water quality to computer visualization demonstrations to river basin disaster management. These intriguing sessions demonstrate that technology touches all aspects of civil engineering work!

Infrastructure
The infrastructure track focuses on two important issues facing today's engineer: site safety and new partnerships required by evolving procurement practices. It also features a Construction Day. On Wednesday and Thursday, four comprehensive sessions will review ASCE's site safety policy, discuss "Hot Topics", and look at the safety effects - "mold" - of water intrusion into buildings. On Friday, the Construction Institute will present four case studies: a major bridge, Brownfield site, airport, and dam. The annual CEO Forum is also scheduled for Friday morning. On Saturday, the sessions will examine the idea of "Culture and Trust" required by new procurement strategies in the United Kingdom.

4th Joint Symposium on Information Technology in Civil Engineering

Saturday & Sunday, November 15 & 16
This workshop is targeted to both industry and academia, to develop a realistic vision for the future of Information Technology in Civil Engineering. IT was once seen either as a panacea for all ills in the civil engineering profession, or conversely as a time/money-wasting distraction. With the advent of low-cost desktop computing and experience in application of computing tools, these polarized views moderated. However, controversy still exists as to the true value and potential of IT and its most productive areas for application.
Moreover, the potential of IT has shifted as professionals have become more fluent in the use of computing technologies and as the needs of industry have changed.

By attending this workshop, you will get a better feel for where we stand and where we should be moving in the development and application of Information Technologies in Civil Engineering.

This workshop will start by looking back at earlier predictions for IT applications in civil engineering and identifying the successes and failures. Determining success or failure requires some agreement on what constitutes a success and how it should be measured, and thus a session is dedicated to this topic.

Having established where we are coming from, the workshop will review where we currently stand and the directions in which we are currently moving. Two sessions will cover trends and professional needs, and emerging information technologies.

The second day will focus on the future of IT in Civil Engineering, with sessions dedicated to establish both North American and European perspectives. Following this, a session will consider the likely barriers and potential solutions to develop and implement IT in Civil Engineering, issues that need to be addressed if our vision is to be realized.

Each session will include presentations by several authors, followed by a panel discussion. Authors and panel participants will come from industry, academia, and government. A longer, more general panel discussion will cap the symposium by debating overall conclusions from the workshop. This workshop is expected to stimulate lively yet constructive debate.

Although the theme of the workshop is to develop our vision for IT in Civil Engineering, research papers will also be presented but within a parallel poster session.

Products of the workshop will include a set of proceedings of session papers, transcripts of discussions, a report summarizing the vision developed, and a special issue of the ASCE Journal of Computing in Civil Engineering that will publish select papers from the workshop.

(See page 22 for Symposium Schedule.)

Presented jointly by the ASCE Committee on Coordination of Computing Activities of the Technical Council on Computing and Information Technology and the European Group for Intelligent Computing in Engineering.

Advance Registration: Member $275. / Non-Member $295. / Speaker: $250. On-Site: Member: $295. / Non-Member $315. / Speaker $275.
