The award was established by CERF in 1996 to honor the late Henry L.Michel, past CERF Chairman and Chairman Emeritus of Parsons Brinckerhoff, Inc.After dinner, the award will be presented to this year's winner, and our keynote speaker will address the group. Harvard's Graduate School of Design and at
UCLA. During his career, he has published
numerous books that explore the new forms
and functions of cities in the digital electronic
era and suggest design and planning directions
for the future.His most recent book is ME++:
The Cyborg Self and the Networked City.
KEYNOTE SPEAKERDeborah L. Jacobs, City Librarian, City of Seattle Public Library, Seattle, WA Through determination and hard work, Deborah L Jacobs envisioned Seattle's library, which will undoubtedly result in changing forever the way library buildings are conceptualized and function.Ms. Jacobs will depict the architecture of the gravity- defying flagship of the new 412,000-sq.-ft. Seattle Central Library and describe how it has created an important impact on the sociological function of the city via a wide variety of new services to be offered there. 7:45 AM - 8:30 AMKEYNOTE SPEAKER Dean Kamen (invited) ROBOTICS: DESIGNING CITIES OF THE FUTURE DIFFERENTLY TO ACCOMMODATE NEW MODES OF TRANSPORTATION Dean Kamen, entrepreneur, developer of the Segway, and an exciting speaker, will provide a vision of opportunities for which the engineering community can expect to design, as cities change to accommodate the future's new modes of transportation.Mr. Kamen's roles as inventor and advocate are intertwined - his own passion for technology and its practical uses has driven his personal determination to spread the word about technology's virtues and by so doing to change the culture of the US.
