KEYNOTE SPEAKER
Marsha "Marty" Johnson Evans
American Red Cross, President and CEO

After nearly 30 years in the US Navy and another four years with the Girl Scouts of the USA, Marty Evans became President and CEO of the American Red Cross in August 2002. Distinguished in the Navy, Evans attained the rank of rear admiral before retiring in 1998, making her one of only a few women to achieve this title in the Navy’s history. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Law and Diplomacy from Occidental College and a Master’s degree in International Security from The Fletcher School at Tufts University.Among many notable leadership roles was Evans’ appointment as Chief of Staff of the US Naval Academy in Annapolis,MD.

In January 1998, Evans assumed the top staff position at the Girl Scouts. Her tenure included creation and expansion of cutting-edge programs to enhance girls’ experiences in science, technology, sports, money management, and community service. She also helped to increase the organization’s adult volunteer pool to an all–time high of one million, with corresponding increases in youth membership.

Evans brings a wealth of valuable insight to the changing needs of nonprofit organizations, as well as a unique perspective on leadership. Since 2002, she has worked to expand Red Cross programs and services in diverse communities and has led the charge to educate the public about disaster preparedness through the Together We Prepare initiative. In addition, she has undertaken a comprehensive strategic planning process, enlisting the views of more than 6,000 Red Crossers from across the country to chart the organization’s course for the future.
