Letter from COPRI President

The Coast, Oceans, Ports, and Rivers Institute (COPRI) of the American Society of Civil Engineers is pleased to present its second Solutions to Coastal Disasters Conference. This conference is a continuing effort by COPRI to engage and serve the worldwide community of coastal engineers, scientists and related professionals. Conference topics include storms, shoreline change, coastal management, seismic events, climate change and changes to sea and lake levels.

The 2005 conference is particularly timely. Last summer's hurricane season will go down in history as one of the most devastating in recent memory with eight hurricanes devastating the U.S. Gulf and East Coasts and severe storms affecting U. S. West Coast infrastructure.

The recent Indian Ocean Earthquake and Tsunami, with all of its continuing tragic consequences, also places emphasis on the need and opportunity for the community of coastal professionals worldwide to share technical information, data, experiences and theories, and thereby lead to developments that improve the ability to predict and moderate events impacting coastal areas worldwide.

Please join us in beautiful Charleston, S.C., a coastal city with considerable charm, for three days of invigorating, challenging and beneficial discussions and exchanges and engagement with an international cadre of world-class professionals.

Gordon H. Sterling, COPRI President
