Portland Convention & Visitors Bureau Travel & Leisure magazine ranks Portland, Oregon, #5 on its list of 100 fabulous places to visit. And it's not hard to understand why. More than 37,000 acres of trees and city parks grace Portland's landscape, while trendy restaurants, clothing shops, and art galleries are popping up all over this pedestrian and public transportation friendly city, making it one of the world's most interesting destinations. The city also boasts a thriving arts community - with a colorful palette of galleries, local theater, and Broadway performances - a world class zoo, arboretum, rose garden, and a children's museum. Perhaps best of all, Portland is a sports enthusiast's dream. It's only an hour's drive to summer snow skiing in the Cascades or to the beautiful and dramatic Pacific Ocean coastline. Of professional interest, the nearby coastline is exposed each year to severe assaults by waves and climate, and a number of large costal structures are within an hour's drive of Portland. The conference will be held at the magnificent Embassy Suites in downtown Portland. Formerly the historic Multnomah Hotel, the hotel has been renovated to retain all of its grandeur while incorporating the amenities expected in a modern, world-class hotel. All rooms are suites, and special rates have been negotiated to make this venue very economical. In addition, the hotel provides its registered guests a complimentary full breakfast each morning and a free happy hour each evening from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm. Water Sports. Portland is wet and wild with water sports in abundance from rafting to sailing, kite and sail boarding, fishing, and boat cruises. Long recognized as a fisherman's haven, the Pacific Northwest is rich with salmon, steelhead trout, and sturgeon. The Oregon Coast. Oregon's rugged coastline is a photographer's dream. A trip down the coast can include stops at the oldest American settlement west of the Rockies, a shopping and art collecting haven, a popular whale-watching site, the Oregon Coast Aquarium, and Sea Lion Caves. Food. Portland has become a magnet for world class chefs who revel in creating menus from the fabulously fresh seafood and produce harvested within a 60-mile radius of the city. Golf. Golf Digest has rated two of Portland's courses - Eastmoreland Golf Course and Heron Lakes Golf Course - among the nation's top 75 public courses. Bicycling. One of the best ways to see Portland is on two wheels. Bicycling magazine has ranked Portland the top cycling city in the U.S. for the second year running. Year-round Skiing. Boasting four ski resorts and North America's longest ski season (including 90 summer days), the 11,235-foot peak of Mount Hood is a mecca for skiers, ice climbers, snow boarders, and hikers. All just an hour's drive from Portland's city center. |
