Tour A: Old Town Canoe Company & Advanced Engineered Wood Composites Center Venture to the Penobscot River town of Old Town, Maine to see canoes and kayaks being crafted by hand at the country's oldest continually run canoe factory, founded in 1880. Also nearby in Orono, visit the University of Maine's Advanced Engineered Wood Composites (AEWC) Center, founded by Prof. Habib Dagher, renowned structural engineer who through research has perfected wood composite technology. This research facility looks at use of modified wood products for building materials from common use to military purposes. (Led by Phil Dunn) Tour B: Penobscot Narrows Bridge & Observatory Get a behind-the-scenes look at the construction site of Maine's first cable-stayed bridge, a major structure for traffic to Maine's eastern coastal areas. This $84 million bridge - a partnership of the Maine Department of Transportation, Federal Highway Administration, Cianbro Corporation, Reed & Reed Construction, and Figg Engineering - will open this fall.
