Congress Program (pdf)

The underlying theme of the 2006 Geo-Congress is geotechnical information. Whether as part of field characterization, laboratory testing, data management, subsurface visualization, numerical simulation, system analysis or geotechnical education activities, information and information technology is playing an ever increasing role in geotechnical practice and academia and this Congress will highlight many of the very significant developments which have occurred, as well as opportunities for future advancements. The outcome from the various elements associated with geotechnical engineering as listed above, frequently complement each other in the development of an overall model of the subsurface and its engineering performance. Accordingly, the role that information technology can play in integrating these phases and streamlining activities will also be emphasized. The meeting will also expand interest in the numerous opportunities that are on the horizon as a result of impending developments in areas such as sensors, nanotechnology, and cyber infrastructure. The technical program will be developed by soliciting proposals for papers, sessions, short courses, demonstrations, debates and workshops from individuals, Geo-Institute technical committees and other national and local organizations. The intent is to offer a diverse range of activities for Congress participants including presentations of technical papers, panel discussions and debates, instructional forums, a student paper competition, software demonstrations, educational technology demonstrations and equipment/hardware/software exhibits. A poster display area will also be located in the exhibit area.

For the purpose of this Congress, information and information technology is being considered under one of four categories:
  • Sensing methods and devices
  • Data synthesis and management
  • Numerical modeling and analysis
  • Simulation and visual analysis
