Technical Tours

Three tours are offered for your selection: Ports™ 2007 attendees will have three technical tours to choose from. Early in the week a tour to the UCSD Englekirk Center Structural Research Laboratory will take place followed up later in the week with two tours of the San Diego harbor, an on-the-water harbor excursion or a land side working waterfront tour.


San Diego Bay Harbor Excursion (cost per ticket $45)
Wednesday March 28, 12:00 noon – 4:00 p.m.

Embark upon a two hour on-the-bay harbor cruise with San Diego Harbor Excursions. This tour is filled with dramatic views of downtown San Diego, the San Diego - Coronado Bay Bridge, Naval Air Station North Island,and several San Diego shipyards, Coronado Island and Naval Amphibious Base, Coronado.The tour will also offer views of Shelter and Harbor Islands,as well as the San Diego Maritime Museum’s fleet including the Star of India.You will also see Hotel del Coronado and Petco Park (home of the San Diego Padres). Lunch will be provided. The tour will be custom-narrated by engineering personnel with the Port of San Diego, U. S. Navy and local engineering consultants.Tickets for this event are available to conference registrants at a cost of $35 perticket. Transportation and box lunch included.


San Diego Bay Working Water Front Tour(cost per ticket $45)
Wednesday March 28, 12:00 noon – 4:00 p.m.

The working waterfront group is a coalition of water dependent businesses along San Diego Bay, the San Diego Port Tenants Association, the Port of San Diego and labor. This consortium offers this guided bus tour designed to give attendees a first hand look at the waterfront businesses along San Diego Bay. The tour is limited to 44 attendees and will give you an awareness of the important role these businesses play in the region’s economy, environment and national security.The working waterfront stretches from National City northward along the Bay to the Tenth Avenue Marine Terminal in San Diego. Continuing along the bay it stretches from Shelter Island’s boatyards to the commercial fishing basin near the North Embarcadero. View major shipyards, Naval Station San Diego, boatyards, The National City Marine Terminal and the Tenth Avenue Marine Terminal.Tickets for this event are available to conference registrants at a cost of $45 per ticket. Transportation and box lunch included.


UCSD Englekirk Center Structural Research Laboratory (cost per ticket $35)
Monday March 26, 2:30 p.m. – 6:00 p.m

With its one-of-a-kind facilities, the Englekirk Structural Engineering Center at the Elliott Campus of the University of California, San Diego is enabling structural tests that have never been possible before. The Center is equipped with the world’s first outdoor shake table adjacent to the country’s largest soil-structure interaction facility, allowing researchers to perform dynamic earthquake safety tests on full-scale structural systems. The Center’s blast simulator will be used to study the effects of bomb blasts and test new technologies to harden buildings against terrorist bomb attacks.
