The Structural Engineering Institute and the Committee on Electrical Transmission Structures invites you to attend a variety of technical tours sponsored by industry leading utility manufacturers. All tours will be held on Thursday, October 19 and are scheduled throughout the day to allow participants flexibility in reviewing the product lines of their choice. Pre-registration for tours is required and space is limited. ![]() Valmont Newmark is a single source for steel, concrete, and hybrid structures for power delivery; transmission, distribution, and substation applications. The tour will visit our first concrete pole plant in Tuscaloosa, AL in production since 1983 and will include a presentation on the design, manufacturing, and use of spun prestressed concrete poles for the utility market. ![]() ![]() ![]() The Steel Structures Division of Thomas & Betts invites our customers to tour the Gadsden, Alabama steel pole fabrication facility. Built in 2001 this 250,000 square foot facility is the newest of the four Thomas & Betts U.S. pole fabrication plants. ![]() As a leader in the design and fabrication of steel poles used in the transmission of power in voltages through 765kV, Thomas & Betts offers three tour times to fit even the tightest schedule. Our tour starts with a short 50-minute bus drive from Birmingham to our plant located near Steele, AL. Items presented will be an overview of the Thomas & Betts pole design process and an up-close view of the fabrication process, including plasma cutting, the press brake, and various welding and finishing processes. After touring the plant, visitors will view a demonstration of a caisson being installed with a vibratory hammer by the American Piledriving Equipment and Erickson Air-Crane Companies. Erickson Air-Crane will then install an 80-foot single piece pole into the newly installed caisson.
Each tour will include breakfast, lunch or snacks/refreshments depending on tour time. Thomas & Betts and Erickson look forward to seeing you at the Gadsden, AL plant. Confirmation of tour selection and notification of any cancelled tours will be included in the registration materials.
