What is ASCE’s eCareer Mentoring?

ASCE believes in the power of mentoring – and we’re committed to bringing our members the tools to form mentoring relationships and encourage professional and personal growth through shared experiences.

eCareerMentor is an online tool that allows ASCE members to connect with other members who share common interests or specific expertise. While eCareerMentor shares the goals of face-to-face mentoring, it greatly expands the opportunity to connect across the globe. Our goal is to support the growth of professional relationships, outside the immediate work environment, for maximum learning advantage.

Interested in joining eCareerMentor but not an ASCE member? Participation is open to all ASCE members free of charge, so join today!

Why Become a Mentor

Mentors are able to practice communication and leadership skills through the program, while serving other members who can learn from their experiences. Advance the civil engineering profession by helping others meet their professional goals.

eCareerMentor Communication Expectations

Successful mentoring involves establishing a dependable frequency of communication between mentor and protégé. As a means to lay the groundwork for a rewarding experience, ASCE has established communication expectations.

  • Both parties should discuss and agree upon the frequency of communication and the best platform.
  • Respond to your mentor’s/protégé’s communications in a timely manner.
  • If your commitments change, modify your availability and discuss changes to this framework with your mentor/protégé.
  • Communicate professionally and respect each other.

Remember, your greatest responsibility in the eCareerMentor relationship is to yourself. Do everything you can to get the most benefits from your relationship with your mentor or protégé. The more you invest, the greater the returns.

All eCareerMentor participants should strive to meet these parameters. If you feel your mentor or protégé is not, please contact us.

ASCE eCareer Mentoring Testimonials

“By browsing through the names of those who offer to serve as mentors you can recognize people who have established careers over long periods of time… and who are authors or engineers who have received awards and accolades." - David P. Devine, P.E., L.S., M.ASCE

"The eCareerMentor program is a great way for a well-seasoned engineer to give back to the engineering community and pass on the experience and knowledge they have gained over the years." – Karen C. Armfield, P.E., M.ASCE

“I’ve been involved in the eMentoring program for about three years… I feel grateful that I have the ability to steer people in the right direction… It’s just a wonderful time helping out people that are looking for a little bit of advice.” – Reed Brockman, P.E., M.ASCE

“I’ve served as a mentor with ASCE for the last seven or eight years… I’ve found it to be a very rewarding experience for me personally, but more importantly I’d like to think I’ve helped others… Just become involved, I think that’s the key to success.” – Joe D. Manous, Jr., Ph.D., P.E., D.WRE, F.EWRI, F.ASCE
