This webinar is part of the LRFD application series and concentrates on shallow foundations. Shallow foundations are often under-utilized in comparison to the costlier deep foundation systems. The LRFD platform offers a rational framework for consideration of shallow foundation systems vis-à-vis deep foundation systems. The webinar will use the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) LRFD Bridge and Structures Specifications as a basis for the technical content. Applicable articles in Section 10.5 and 10.6 of AASHTO LRFD Specifications will be used as a basis of discussion. The webinar will discuss the development of the bearing resistance chart that permits consideration of several limit states (settlement, limiting eccentricity, and bearing resistance) in one convenient format. Other limit states such as sliding will also be discussed. Participants should have a basic working knowledge of the various methods to estimate bearing resistance and settlements of shallow foundations on soil and rock. The seminar is co-sponsored by ASCE's
Geo-Institute
(GI)
and ASCE Continuing Education.
