About The ASCE Foundation

ASCE Foundation In 1994, the American Society of Civil Engineers created the ASCE Foundation to purchase and operate a new world headquarters building and to serve as the fund raising development arm of the civil engineering community. Incorporated as a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization, all gifts to the Foundation are tax deductible.

In October 1995, the Foundation launched its first fund raising campaign, Building for the 21st Century, to finance the new ASCE World Headquarters Building. Through the generosity of many contributors, the campaign raised more than $4.6 million, far exceeding its goal of $3.5 million.

Additionally, the Foundation managed the Grand Opening of the ASCE World Headquarters on December 3, 1997 and the Dedication events held on April 17, 1998.

Having successfully completed this initial fund raising mission, the Foundation embarked upon a strategic planning program, which involved hundreds of civil engineers from across the country. A new mission for the Foundation emerged from this effort - To generate resources for the civil engineering profession.

To support this new mission, a number of fund raising programs were implemented, including a planned giving program, an annual appeal, a sponsorship program, and fund raising consulting for other non-profit organizations associated with civil engineering.

The Foundation also initiated The Civil Engineering Legacy Society, a society of ASCE members and friends who by using a planned giving vehicle such as a bequest, life insurance or retirement fund designation, trust, or other estate planning gift, provide a future gift to the ASCE Foundation.

In October 2000, the Foundation launched its second capital campaign on behalf of ASCE and the Civil Engineering Research Foundation (CERF now CEFI). 2002: Building The Future was the Foundation's commitment to helping ASCE and CERF build strong financial foundations for the 21st century. The campaign generated resources to ensure the success of numerous public awareness programs planned in conjunction with ASCE's 150th Anniversary and build an Innovation Fund for CERF to expedite the movement of innovation into practice for the civil engineering, construction, and environmental community worldwide. A campaign goal of $6 million was set for the 2002: Building The Future campaign and $6.7 million was raised over two years culminating at ASCE's 150th Anniversary in November 2002.

Since the completion of its two captial campaigns, the Foundation continues to generate resources for the civil engineering profession. In its 12 year history, the Foundation has raised more thatn $18 million for ASCE and its affiliates.
