ASCE Video Tributes to 2009 Honorees

Watch these brief video profiles to learn why ASCE chose to bestow its highest honors on these outstanding civil engineers and engineering projects in 2009, and celebrate them at the OPAL Gala, April 23 in Arlington, Va.

Honoring five of civil engineering's greatest for their lifetime achievements, this year's Outstanding Projects and Leaders awards go to:

  • -- Construction: John F. Donohoe, M.ASCE, chairman of the board, Moretrench American Corporation
  • -- Design: Jeremy Isenberg, Ph.D., P.E., Hon.M.ASCE, NAE, senior principal, AECOM
  • -- Education: J. Michael Duncan, Ph.D., P.E., Dist.M.ASCE, NAE, university distinguished professor, emeritus and associate director of the Center for Geotechnical Practice and Research Company, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University
  • -- Government: David J. Nash, P.E., Rear Admiral, CEC, U.S. Navy (ret.), F.ASCE, director, Project Management Office
  • -- Management: Thomas D. Furman, Jr., P.E., BCEE, M.ASCE, former chairman and chief executive officer, CDM

The OPAL Gala is also the scene where the Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement award is announced; in 2009 the winner is Orange County, California's Groundwater Replenishment System. Also nominated were:

  • -- Bundle 401, Oregon 38: Elk Creek-Hardscrabble Creek Bridge Delivery Program, Elkton, Oregon
  • -- I-35W Bridge, Minneapolis
  • -- Lake Brazos Labyrinth Weir, Waco, Texas
  • -- Motagua Bridge, La Garrucha, Guatemala
  • -- H. Clay Whaley, Sr., Memorial Water Plant, St. Cloud, Florida

Also honored are the winners of the Henry L. Michel Award for Industry Advancement of Research, and the Charles Pankow Award for Innovation. This year, those winners are:

  • -- Michel Award: Vice Admiral Michael K. Loose, P.E., M.ASCE, Civil Engineer Corps deputy chief of Naval Operations for Fleet Readiness and Logistics
  • -- Pankow Award: Claremont Tunnel Seismic Upgrade Project, Berkeley, California
