4th Annual Wissa Lecture: "Lessons Learned from Failed MSE Walls"
November 5, 2014
Tampa, Florida
Lecturer: Dov Leshchinsky, Ph.D., M.ASCE
, Professor Emeritus, University of Delaware and Founding Partner, ADAMA Engineering

During the past two decades, mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) walls have gained acceptance in major and critical applications. Generally, MSE walls are economical, aesthetically pleasing and, if properly designed and constructed, safe. However, as is the typical case with fine-tuned structures, details are critically important as the structural redundancy could be limited. Several case histories of failed MSE walls will be presented and forensic studies will be discussed.

Workshop: Ground Motion and Geotechnical Data Requirements in the 2012 IBC/2013 IBC
presented by Zia Zafir, Ph.D., P.E., G.E.

October 16, 2014
6:00 PM TO 8:30 PM
Oakland, California

Register online

Seismic data requirements for buildings and structures changed significantly with the new 2012 International Building Code (IBC) and 2013 California Building Code (CBC), especially in terms of design ground motions and site characterization. Ground motion and geotechnical data requirements in the new code are based on ASCE 7-10. This presentation will discuss the fundamentals and basis of different seismic and geotechnical data requirements of the new code. In addition, the philosophy behind the new data requirements and their impacts on the design will be presented.

"Geotechnical Site Characterization - The Ethical Dilemma of Low Bidding Pricing"
presented by Victor Donaldson, P.E.

October 22, 2014
6:00 PM TO 8:30 PM
Oakland, California

Register online

The geotechnical engineer is often selected to perform a geotechnical investigation for a planned structure based solely upon their price to do the job. Contractors often find that the site geotechnical characterization is lacking in quantity or quality, and they must make assumptions that create conservatism. This conservatism results in bid prices that are inflated far in excess of the fees of a more thorough geotechnical investigation.
This presentation will address the ethical dilemma that a professional geotechnical engineer has regarding the procurement of their services. Using the results of a recent survey of our peers regarding this topic, we will explore what we collectively think of this dilemma and what we can do to improve upon it.
