John A. Roebling Symposium and Tours
October 27-29, 2006
In honor of John A. Roebling's 200th Anniversary, ASCE's History and Heritage Committee, together with the New Jersey and Metropolitan Sections, is sponsoring a one-day symposium on Roebling's life, work, and influence on civil engineering followed by a one-day motor coach tour of Roebling-related projects and sites. The symposium will be held on Friday, Oct. 27, 2006 at the New York Marriott at the Brooklyn Bridge, in Brooklyn, N.Y. The tours will start on Saturday and will include the Brooklyn Bridge, Roebling wire rope factory sites, and the Delaware Aqueduct. The tour starts with a motor coach ride to the Delaware Aqueduct and then a tour of the Roebling factory and artifacts related to the Roebling legacy. A box lunch will be provided on the bus courtesy of the New Jersey Section and the Central Jersey Branch of ASCE. The weekend will conclude with a walking tour of the Brooklyn Bridge as well as other Roebling sites in New York.
To accommodate your stay in Brooklyn for the Symposium and tours, we have arranged for a block of rooms at the Marriott Hotel at the Brooklyn Bridge in Brooklyn, N.Y. These rooms will be available at ASCE's special rate until the end of Sept. 2006.
These events are being co-sponsored by ASCE's History and Heritage Committee, the New Jersey and Metropolitan Sections of ASCE, and the Construction Institute. To start off this celebration, the Metropolitan Section, together with the Civil Engineering Department of the Polytechnic University, is sponsoring an icebreaker for attendees on Thursday, Oct. 26, 2006 at the University.
