Do Your Part to Help Rebuild Iraq

Engineers at Iraq's Ministry of Construction and Housing

Since the overthrow of the former Iraqi regime, much of the battle to rebuild the country is taking place in offices and at construction sites around the country. The "army" waging this fight is a talented contingent of civil engineers at Iraq's Ministry of Construction and Housing. The Ministry has 15 construction companies and private sector assistance engaged in all elements of the construction and materials production business, from building and repairing roads and bridges to rehabilitating and constructing buildings like the Ministry of Justice Building and the National Assembly Building.

The civil engineers in Iraq have overseen these feats without the basic equipment and technical guides other engineers rely on every day. Looters destroyed the Ministry's technical libraries. Over 4,000 pieces of construction equipment and equipment from 13 materials testing laboratories were stolen. Adding to these losses, 30 years of isolation have left the Ministry without current engineering and construction technology and equipment, particularly computer hardware and necessary software applications.

The Ministry is at the center of the reconstruction effort in Iraq. Their technical engineering knowledge, expertise and equipment, as well as their courage and perseverance, are their tools in the struggle to rebuild Iraq. But for their effort to be successful, they must restore and update their necessary equipment and technical knowledge. From copies of design build training manuals to the last two years' issues of engineering periodicals and publications, any assistance in this capacity building effort is enthusiastically welcomed.

Please consider contributing new or lightly used equipment and resources to the civil engineers working in Iraq. Contact Mike Sanio, 703-295-6116, with offers of assistance.
