Deputy Executive Director - Lawrence H. Roth, P.E., G.E., F.ASCE

As the Assistant Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), Lawrence H. Roth manages the Society's annual operating budget, which exceeds $40 million. He is responsible for ASCE's professional, technical, educational, and international activities, and directs its commercial operations, which includes publications, conferences, and continuing education programs. Mr. Roth joined ASCE after a thirty-year career in consulting where he was a nationally recognized leader in civil and geotechnical engineering practice. He practiced engineering for more than 20 years with CH2M Hill, San Francisco, where he was senior vice president, and he also served as vice president and principal engineer for two San Francisco geotechnical engineering firms. He is a registered professional engineer in six states and a registered geotechnical engineer in California. Over the course of his career, Mr. Roth was an active volunteer with the Society. His contributions were pivotal in the development of the Geo-Institute of the ASCE, where he served on its Board of Governors and was its first President. Mr. Roth chaired the ASCE Embankment Dams and Slopes Technical Committee, the Organizing Committee for ASCE's Specialty Conference on Stability and Performance of Embankment Dams and Slopes II - A 25-Year Perspective, and the Geotechnical Engineering Division Executive Committee. Other ASCE volunteer work includes membership on the Strategic Planning Committee and on the Committee on Professional Practice, and service as President of ASCE's San Francisco Section. For his accomplishments and contributions to the society and profession, Mr. Roth received the 1998 President's Medal from ASCE. Mr. Roth also served as President of ASFE/Professional Firms Practicing in the Geosciences and is a member of ASFE's Council of Fellows. Mr. Roth earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in civil and environmental engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and has served on the Curriculum Advisory Committee of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering there. In the fall of 2000, Mr. Roth received the Distinguished Service Citation from the University of Wisconsin-Madison College of Engineering.
