ASCE Energy Division Call For Members Mission The mission of the ASCE Energy Division is:
The benefits of participation in the ASCE Energy Division, particularly on the Technical Committees are:
Technical Committees Energy Division Technical Committees produce a number of products useful to ASCE members:
Chair: Mario Finis, P.E., M.ASCE mario.finis@mwhglobal.com Four active task committees: Environmental Effects Committee Chair: James L. Martin, P.E., F.ASCE jmartin@engr.msstate.edu Fossil Generation Committee Chair, James L. Ryan, P.E., jryan@bechtel.com Re-energization is underway. Active task committee: Emerging Energy Technologies Committee Chair: Hilary Inyang, Ph.D., M.ASCE Hilary.inyang@gmail.com Current activity includes expanding membership and increasing contribution, visibility, and involvement in the emerging/alternative energy field. Petrochemical Committee Chair Magdy Hanna, M.ASCE Magdy.hanna@Jacobs.com Four active Task Committees: "TC on Blast Design for Petrochemical Facilities", Chair, William L. Bounds, P.E., M.ASCE, william.bounds@fluor.com Nuclear Energy Committee Chair: Vacant (C. Hookham - temporary) The Energy Division ExCom seeks a chair for this committee. Re-energization plans for the committee are also being established. Journal of Energy Engineering The Journal of Energy Engineering reports on the development of scientific and engineering knowledge in the planning, management, and generation of electrical power. Subjects include fossil, nuclear and radioactive waste disposal, hydropower planning and design, the development of other renewable resources such as solar, wind, and waste to energy systems, energy conservation, and the environmental effects and means for conserving natural resources. Papers are solicited in three categories:
EY Journal Editor for further information. Publications The Energy Division has been active in producing ASCE guidelines and manuals of practice. UPDATE! Steel Penstocks - ASCE Manuals and Reports on Engineering Practice No. 79 ISBN Number 0-87262-951-1 - ERRATTA For a full listing and ordering information go to www.asce.org/publications/books.cfm Some recent Energy Division publications have included:
Fossil Generation Committee: The newly formed Education committee, under the leadership of Ron Neufeld, is preparing a presentation directed towards educating younger engineers and students on the involvement of civil engineers in the energy field. Contributions are welcomed - please contact Ron Neufeld neufeld@engr.pitt.edu. The Emerging Energy Technologies Committee, chaired by Hilary Inyang, sponsored a conference held in 2005 on sustainable energy technologies in concert with UNESCO. A task force on Sustainable Energy Infrastructure and Systems (SEIS) is being formed with the goal of publishing a book on this topic in 2007. The ASCE Energy Division is seeking a chair of the technical committee for Nuclear Energy Engineering. Please contact the EY ExCom Chair for information. The Energy Division recently published its Strategic Plan for the period 2005-2010, outlining renewed goals, actions, and focus for coming years. A copy of this Plan may be obtained from the Excom Chair. The vulnerability of energy and petrochemical facilities to natural disasters has been witnessed on many fronts, including those from Hurricane Katrina domestically. Many of the Energy Division technical committees are focused on this vulnerability, with the Petrochemical committee actively engaged in updating previous standards and design guidelines. The new era of nuclear power is dawning, with many utilities and owner groups actively engaged in site studies, prudency reviews, and discussions with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. It is anticipated that work on the next round of advanced light water reactors will begin in earnest in year 2006. In August 2005, the Energy Policy Act of 2005 was signed into law by the President of the United States. In its 1700 pages of text, EPACT 2005 lays out many changes to regulation, provides new incentives for investing in infrastructure and technology, calls for numerous studies, and includes provisions significantly revising FERC's enforcement and civil penalty authorities. A synthesized version of the EPACT is available at the following link: http://www.bv.com/news/publications/1700pages3400words.pdf The ASCE Energy Division continually seeks active participation by individuals interested in energy issues related to power generation and civil engineering. If you are interested in sharing your experience and talents with other engineers working in this field, please respond to any of the technical committee chairs listed above or look to ASCE/Professional Communities/Power Generation. Awards Call for Nominations Important changes recently made to the rules for both the Rickey Medal, and the Stephen D. Bechtel, Jr. Energy Awards
