Frequently Asked Questions from Domestic Engineers

I am a member of an ASCE Domestic Section. How can my Section establish an International Committee?

You can place an article in your Section Newsletter advising of plans to establish a Section International Committee and inviting interested members to apply for membership and for chair positions. Then you can create a Committee from your interested members and hold an election of officers. Currently, the Metropolitan Section (New York), the National Capital Section (Washington, D.C.) and the Los Angeles Section (California) have established International Committees. For more information on establishing an International Committee in your Section, you may contact these Sections directly or contact ASCE's International Affairs Department at international@asce.org.

Alternatively, a domestic Section can join the Partnering Program. Any ASCE Section may select one of the eight International Sections or fifteen International Groups for the purpose of exchanging professional, technical and cultural information. There are no stringent guidelines that the Sections must follow. The level and the type of activities are determined by the Sections involved.

The following are a few suggestions of possible activities to get started:

  1. Section or individual member of Section could donate an annual subscription to a journal or set of journals. This is desperately needed in most countries due to the high cost incurred by exchange rates.
  2. Exchange Section newsletters.
  3. Welcome visits/speakers from host countries.
  4. Have a "pen pal" from a Section regarding engineering issues, or use the Internet for "chat room" sessions and exchange information via e-mail.
  5. Assist in award nominations for members from your partner country.
  6. Assist your partner country in educating about ASCE's committee structure and suggest/recommend committee for international corresponding members.
  7. Initiate an exchange program or clearing house for job and/or contract opportunities between the two countries.
  8. Section or Section Member donation of continuing education (cassette) program to the partner country.

To participate in the program, or obtain additional information, you can contact International Affairs by calling 703-295-6300, by fax at 703-295-6128, or by e-mail at international@asce.org.
