Frequently Asked Questions from International Engineers

I am an International Member and would like to find out how I can come to the U.S. to work. Whom can I contact to get this information? Where can I find out about licensing and registration procedures?

  1. Available employment positions in the U.S. are listed in your monthly editions of ASCE News and Civil Engineering Magazine as well as on the ASCE Career Connections website www.asce.org/careers. If you specialize in an engineering field, you can contact: International Affairs Department by writing to 1801 Alexander Bell Dr., Reston, Virginia 20191-4400 or contact us by calling 703-295-6300, by fax at 703-295-6128, or by e-mail at international@asce.org.

  2. ASCE members can also post their resumes to ASCE?s resume database. There is no charge for this service and the database is used by hundreds of US and international firms each month. ASCE membership does not automatically entitle international members work authorization in the U.S. Anyone wanting to apply for a listed position must pursue the channels necessary to obtain appropriate work authorization. To post your resume go to http://careers.asce.org/apply/advertise.cfm and fill out the form.

  3. To get information on working in the U.S., you must visit the U.S. Consulate in your home country. Permission to obtain immigrant worker status varies from country to country.

  4. Each State in the U.S. has its own licensing requirements. In order to work anywhere in the U.S., you must be licensed by the state in which you intend to work. Licensing requirements can be obtained from:
NCEES - National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying
    P.O. Box 1686
    280 Seneca Creek Road
    Clemson, South Carolina 29633-1686
    Telephone: 864-654-6824, Fax: 864-654-6033

This information can be obtained under "International Sections" on this website.
