Five Industry Professionals Selected to Judge 2004 ASCE/MBT National Concrete Canoe CompetitionThe American Society of Civil Engineers and Master Builders, Inc. together selected five industry professionals to serve as judges for the 2004 National Concrete Canoe Competition. The event, which challenges civil engineering students to design, build and race canoes constructed of concrete, takes place June 18-20, 2004, in Washington, D.C.Organized by ASCE and sponsored by Master Builders, Inc., with co-sponsor support from Baker Concrete Construction, CEMEX US Operations and U.S. Silica Company, this 17th annual test of academic achievement and athletic ability features teams of student engineers from 22 colleges and universities across North America. To qualify, teams must win one of 18 regional competitions held during the months of April and May. Ron Burg, Vice President of Construction Technologies Laboratories in Skokie, IL, served as a judge in the 16th Annual Competition held last year in Philadelphia, PA. He has been asked to serve as the Returning Judge for the 2004 Competition. Four others will serve for the first time: Anne Ellis, Vice President of Strategic Initiatives for Earth Tech, Inc. in Alexandria, VA; Mark Luther, Senior Technical Services Engineer for Holcim (US) Inc. in Chesterfield, MO; Paul Hobelmann, Structural Design Principal at Kling in Washington, D.C.; and Sahadat Hossain, Senior Engineer for Schnabel Engineering in Gaithersburg, MD. "Judging the National Concrete Canoe Competition can be extremely rewarding, but it requires a significant commitment of time and energy.
