National CompetitionThe American Society of Civil Engineers and The Catholic University of America are pleased to host the 17th annual ASCE/MBT National Concrete Canoe Competition in Washington, DC. The Concrete Canoe Competition provides students with a practical application of the engineering principles they learn in the classroom, along with important team and project management skills they'll need in their careers. The event will challenge the knowledge, creativity and stamina of students, while showcasing the versatility and durability of concrete as a building material. Teams qualify for the NCCC by placing first in one of the 18 Regional Competitions held throughout the United States in the spring. Teams that placed second behind a university that finished in the top five at the previous year's National Competition, are also invited. In the sixteen years of the competition, more than 350 teams and nearly 6,000 students have participated at the National level. In past years, teams from Canada and Mexico have competed. The National Competition is held in mid-June each year and is hosted by a student chapter of the ASCE at universities across the U.S.The winners of the American Society of Civil Engineers/Master Builders, Inc. National Concrete Canoe Competition shall be determined by compiling a team's total number of points from the academic and race portions of the competition. Master Builders, Inc. shall award a total of $9,000 in academic scholarships to the winning teams' undergraduate civil engineering program. To be eligible to receive a scholarship, the entrant school must be a recognized ASCE Student Chapter/Club. Selection of the academic scholarship winner(s) shall be determined by the local ASCE Student Chapter/Club. The scholarship shall be used toward satisfying tuition reimbursements only and shall not be used to fund current or future concrete canoe competitions. ASCE and Master Builders shall be notified in writing of academic scholarship winner(s) prior to distribution to recipients. Total scholarship awards shall be distributed as follows: 1st place overall winner -- $5,000 scholarship & trophy 2nd place overall winner -- $2,500 scholarship & trophy 3rd place overall winner -- $1,500 scholarship & trophy Special plaques shall be awarded to the top team in the following individual categories:
Ribbons shall be awarded to teams finishing second through fifth in each event. Each team shall receive a commemorative plaque for their participation in the National Concrete Canoe Competition. All ten registered team members in the National Concrete Canoe Competition shall receive a certificate of participation for the National Competition.
