What are the Qualifications to Establish an ASCE Chapter, Club, or International Student Group?
ASCE Student Chapter
May be established at any school with the following qualifications*:
- Institution has an ABET-accredited (or an ABET identified substantially equivalent) Civil Engineering or related (Architectural, Construction, Environmental or Survey Engineering) program leading to a bachelor's or master's degree;
- Institution has at least one (1) full-time faculty member who is an ASCE member and who agrees to serve as faculty advisor;
- Endorsement of the application by the Civil Engineering department head or equivalent;
- Endorsement of the application by official action of the ASCE Section or Branch in whose jurisdiction the institution is located;
- Completion of one year of successful operation under the effective guidance of the ASCE Section or Branch in whose jurisdiction the institution is located;
- Existing organized group of students has a minimum membership of 12 undergraduate and/or graduate students (at least half-time) in a Civil Engineering or related (Architectural, Construction, Environmental or Survey Engineering) program.
ASCE Student Club
May be established at any school with the following qualifications*:
- Institution has:
* A non-ABET-accredited baccalaureate degree program in Civil Engineering or related engineering (Architectural, Construction, Environmental, or Survey Engineering); OR
* An ABET-accredited baccalaureate degree program in General Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology or related engineering technology (Architectural, Construction, Environmental, or Survey Engineering); OR
* An ABET-accredited two-year degree program in Civil Engineering Technology or related engineering technology (Architectural, Construction, Environmental, or Survey Engineering); OR
* A two-year pre-engineering degree program.
- Institution has at least one (1) full-time faculty member who is an ASCE Fellow, Member, or Associate Member and who agrees to serve as faculty advisor;
- Endorsement of the application by the Civil Engineering department head or equivalent;
- Endorsement of the application by official action of the ASCE Section or Branch in whose jurisdiction the institution is located;
- Completion of one year of successful operation under the effective guidance of the ASCE Section or Branch in whose jurisdiction the institution is located;
- Existing organized group of students has a minimum membership of 12 undergraduate students (at least half-time) in a program of Civil Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology, related engineering or technology, or pre-engineering.
ASCE International Student Group
May be established at any school with the following qualifications*:
- Institution has a baccalaureate degree program in Civil Engineering or Civil Engineering Technology;
- Institution has at least one (1) full-time faculty member who is an ASCE Fellow, Member, or Associate Member and who agrees to serve as faculty advisor;
- Endorsement of the application by the Civil Engineering department head or equivalent;
- Endorsement of the application by official action of the ASCE Section or Group in whose jurisdiction the institution is located;
- Completion of one year of successful operation under the effective guidance of the ASCE Section or Group in whose jurisdiction the institution is located;
- Existing organized group of students has a minimum membership of 12 undergraduate and/or graduate students (at least half-time) in a program of Civil Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology, or related engineering or technology (Construction, Environmental, or Surveying).
