Earthquake Investigation Committee
Purpose: The purpose of the Earthquake Investigation Committee (EIC) is to initiate, organize, train for and coordinate post-earthquake investigations in areas of interest to the Technical Council on Lifeline Earthquake Engineering; to develop post-earthquake investigation guidelines for use in such investigations; to organize a team of individuals for immediate response to post-earthquake investigations; to prepare post-earthquake investigation reports. CURRENT EVENTS: Sumatra Earthquake and Tsunami Monograph The final version of the monograph should be available from ASCE publications later this fall. 2006 ANNUAL COMMITTEE MEETING: The Investigation Committee held its year 2007 meeting in and around Portland, OR. On Thursday May 31, the Oregon Department of Transportation conducted an earthquake bridge damage workshop. EIC Committee members Mark Yashinsky and Les Youd made a presentation to the group on earthquake damage modes of bridges. They were assisted by committee member Yumei Wang from the State of Oregon who presented what Oregon was doing for their earthquake program. ![]() Photo 1 - Holly Winston at ODOT Class ![]() Photo 2 - Dinner w/Committee On June 1, the committee had their annual committee business meeting at the State of Oregon office building (hosted by Yumei Wang). We discussed various projects and funding. We had a very special presentation by JR Gonzalez from the Oregon PUC discussing the reliability of electrical power in Oregon. Member Alex Tang was presented with the TCLEE Honor Award for his countless hours of service to ASCE and TCLEE. ![]() Photo 3 - Holly Winston at ODOT Class ![]() Photo 4 - Dinner w/Committee Later in the day we car pooled to the Oregon Health Services University (OHSU) which is one of the largest teaching hospitals in the nation. Our host, Ali Sadri gave us a presentation on their systems and programs and a tour of some of their recent seismic upgrades. Finally, committee member, Teresa Elliott gave us a tour of the City of Portland Water Bureau's emergency operations center. ![]() Photo 5 - John Eidinger Discusses Pipe Joints We concluded the day with a group dinner at a local fish restaurant. ![]() Photo 6 & 7 - Dinner Again On June 2nd, committee member, Dr. Steve Dickenson arranged a tour of the Port of Portland airport and seaport facilities. We started at the airport with a presentation by the airport staff on their emergency procedures. During that meeting, Steve was presented with the TCLEE Honor Award for his service to TCLEE and the committees. We then took a quick tour of the Multnomah County Drainage District's main pumping station. Mr. Dave Hendricks gave us a presentation on this district that provides flood protection for the airport and other local areas. Lastly, our busy day concluded with a driving tour of the port's container yards along the Columbia River. ![]() Photo 11 - Container Cargo Cranes at Port of Portland Those that remained, met downtown for dinner and a walk along the Columbia River to observe the Rose Festival Celebration and fireworks.
